WeTransfer Not Working?

It's not your internet. It's not your browser. WeTransfer's free plan is now limited to 3GB per transfer, 10 transfers per month, and 3-day link expiry. After Bending Spoons acquired them in 2024, the restrictions got aggressive. Here's what's actually happening and how to send your files right now.

Why WeTransfer Fails

File Too Large

WeTransfer's free plan caps at 3GB. Video files, project archives, photo sets — anything real exceeds this. The error doesn't always say 'too large.' Sometimes it just fails.

Monthly Cap Hit

10 transfers per month. Hit that limit Tuesday and you're locked out until the 1st. The counter doesn't care if your transfers were 50MB each.

Server Issues

WeTransfer routes everything through their servers. Servers go down, get overloaded, have maintenance windows. When their infrastructure has a bad day, your transfer fails.

The Restrictions Keep Coming

Since Bending Spoons acquired WeTransfer in 2024: unlimited → 10 transfers. 7-day expiry → 3-day. Optional account → mandatory. This trajectory doesn't reverse.

The Fix

Skip the Cloud. Transfer Directly.

These problems exist because cloud-based transfer services upload your files to a server first. P2P transfer skips the server entirely — files go straight from your device to theirs.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is WeTransfer actually down or is it just me?

Check status.wetransfer.com for outages. But most 'not working' issues aren't outages — they're the free plan limits: 3GB cap, 10 transfers/month, 3-day link expiry. The product is designed to frustrate free users into paying $14.99/month.

What happened to WeTransfer?

Bending Spoons (private equity) acquired it in July 2024 and applied their standard playbook: fire most of the team, restrict the free tier, push paid conversions. They did the same to Evernote and Meetup. The full timeline is here.

What's the fastest way to send my file right now?

If the recipient is online: start a P2P transfer. No upload, no account, no size limit. Files go directly from your browser to theirs. Takes about 30 seconds to set up.

What if my recipient isn't online?

Then you need a cloud service — Google Drive, Dropbox, or Perkoon cloud storage. Upload once, share a link.
